A new pet is an exciting experience. But remember that pet adoption is the same as parenthood and you should treat it as such! Pets are going to depend on you their ENTIRE life to take good care of them, provide for them and love them unconditionally. With that said, only adopt a pet when you are capable of properly provide for them. That does not mean to just feed them, but to be able to provide medical care as needed, house them properly and give them your love and TIME. And remember to pick a pet that fits your lifestyle. For example, big dogs do not belong in apartments … period! Elderly should not adopt large, overactive dogs. Aggressive pets should not be adopted by people with small children, etc. Adopt a pet that fits your time, energy and commitment to maintain with regards to grooming and exercise. A little homework can make for a great pet relationship when the time is right. Consult the American Kennel Club website for breed information. And last but not least, NEVER CHOOSE A PET FOR ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL! You wouldn’t surprise another person with a child for Christmas or their birthday, the same goes for pets.
