Now is a great time to trim a few pounds off your dog. The best way to accomplish this is by taking it slow, steady, and doing it smartly. Start by setting a target weight and profile. Weight charts for purebreds (or similiar built mixed breeds) are available through many sources. Target profiles are simply this: ribs should be easily felt under the skin but not seen; looking from above and the side, the belly should "cut" in from the chest. With that said, the rules are simple. 1) Check the feeding chart on your good quality dog food for the amount of food fed to a dog of your target weight. And then feed only 70% of this amount! 2) Split this amount into 2 meals. This keeps the pet slightly hungry but not to the point of starvation. 3) Add to this, an increasing amount of walking (low impact to joints). Always start small. 4) Avoid ALL treats that you would not place in a shirt pocket for fear of grease stains! 5) Remain persistent! 6) Stay smart by following the above rules. Change takes time.
